An hour later, they had reached most of Pete’s friends with Loon Rescue as well as former colleagues from the college, several former students with whom he’d stayed in touch, and the four people involved in the Pelican River Action Committee, including the lawyer who had written the memo, Rich Hartman.

Lew called him, but before she could say anything, he said, “Chief Ferris, I am heartbroken. When I got the news of Pete’s heart attack—”

“Rich, stop right there,” said Lew. “This is still confidential, but there was no heart attack. My brother was murdered. I don’t know by whom yet but I will find the person. Trust me.”

After a short pause, Rich said, “I wonder if it’s related to our work against the mining operation. We were trying to keep a lid on our work until we could get this lawsuit filed. We had hoped to do that as early as next week …”

“I have your memo and the reports on the pollution that sulfide mining can cause. Do you need Pete’s files back? Also, we have the checkbook belonging to your organization.”

“Yes, I would appreciate that but, one more question, do you think his daughter—and his wife—would mind if I say a few words tomorrow? Pete was a close friend of mine.”

“I’ll have Bridget introduce you,” said Lew. She didn’t mention Linda. She didn’t care if Linda minded or not.
